Institutions and vulnerability

I went on a trip that my dear friend termed the Manifestation of the Divine. We hiked/ran through a surreal, beautiful, desolate slot canyon. I was already enlightened, my heart full, and my legs tired when we listened to Dr. Brene Brown, "The Power of Vulnerability." I will quote her here so that I don't misinterpret.

The research shows that we try to ward off disappointment with a shield of cynicism, disarm shame by numbing ourselves against joy, and circumvent grief by shutting off our willingness to love," explains Dr. Brown. When we become aware of these patterns, she teaches, we begin to become conscious of how much we sacrifice in the name of self-defense-and how much richer our lives become when we open ourselves to vulnerability.

"In my research," Dr. Brown says, "the word I use to describe people who can live from a place of vulnerability is wholehearted." Being wholehearted is a practice-one that we can choose to cultivate through empathy, gratitude, and awareness of our vulnerability armor. Join this engaging and heartfelt teacher on The Power of Vulnerability as she offers profound insights on leaning into the full spectrum of emotions-so we can show up, let ourselves be seen, and truly be all in

I was feeling wholehearted and armed with how to deal with shame triggers when I walked into work on Monday. Good thing, my boss, citing lack of funding, said in front of the entire lab (which he had purposely gathered) that I would be done after my contract ended. Decided to take the summer off and hang out with Ivan. Hopefully get some unemployment. Cultivate joy, play, and white space and hopefully come across a new career. I knew that I had been trying this thing too many times and I had finally learned my lesson.

Anyway, the reason I am writing this is because it dawned on me last night what Dr. Brene Brown means when she says that all of the above is an epidemic. I have two very distinct experiences with my employer, Montana State University where the institution as a whole uses shame on it's employees, protects itself from vulnerability, does not practice empathy, and has a huge armor up for self defense. All of this sounds like it should be obvious and that is how something should work, but it is to the detriment of the very people making the institution function. With it, people do not find joy in their employment,  and ultimately leaves the institution could be much better. I have two examples that have really scarred me and I think those scars will fade but they will probably never disappear.

The Bobcat Triathlon
I donated my time and some of my money to establish a triathlon on the MSU campus. All proceeds went to the Triathlon Club. Montana State University employees sat me down and told me that some Dean told them I could not put on the race anymore. I could help the students to do it, and it didn't matter that it would take more of my volunteer time. Basically, they told a volunteer we don't want your service. I had poured my heart and soul into establishing that race and was absolutely devastated.  Until now, I have not been able to understand what happened except for my long list of examples. First, the institution itself shamed me (no person would take responsibility). Further, because it was the institution there was no empathy, no compassion and really, no accountability. That shame, like a little kid being told his art isn't good enough, put my race promoting on hold, probably forever. Shame devastated. The institution has itself set up to have no one person doing the shaming. They have their armor.

My latest (and greatest) job fail

I was hired by a new Endowed Chair. He fed me everything I wanted to hear. Co-PI, run the lab when he was gone, etc. I signed up immediately. Turns out, this guy is a bucket of crazy. I think he may even be a con artist. He gives me a project, absolutely no guidance, and an unattainable deadline. ( I should have discussed the deadline with him but didn't, first mistake). I miss the deadline, he gets shame triggered, I get shame triggered, he tries to give a really bad pep talk, I stand up for myself, I get laid off citing funding.  A couple of days later he gets a 2 million dollar donation. Clearly, money is not the problem. I am a female and I stood up to him. He fired me. Total bullshit. Here is the problem. I am at a loss for recourse. MSU has set up annual contracts for all of it's professional employees. I didn't get a contract renewal. That's it. I could file a grievance but it is initially to be directed at the supervisor. I can't go to him and tell him I think he fired me because I am a woman. Can I? The institution is armoring themselves and protecting themselves. There is no accountability for laying someone off. No empathy.

Global Climate Change- letter to senators

Global Climate Change

I am writing this letter to urge you to stop the Trump administration from dismissing climate change. Please do not let Pruitt become the helm the EPA, please bring back EPA grants and contracts, and please fight to keep the climate change website up and not censored. Global climate change is not a hoax, it is real, and it impacts life across the globe.

I have a career doing research. One huge take away from graduate school is that we understand enough of biodiversity, or the variety of life on Earth including genetic variation within a species, to know that it is key to the functioning of this planet(1). Further, because of global climate change we know that our planet's biodiversity is disappearing everyday(2,3). The impact of biodiversity loss is all encompassing.  From the inevitable extinction of the polar bear, a keystone species (4,5) and the American pika (6), to the loss of diversity in phytoplantkon that provide our planet with oxygen, to indigenous people that are being displaced from their homes (7), and to the lack of food to feed our planet(8).

I am also a compassionate human being and science aside am baffled at how an administration and their supporters can have so little compassion for life. Indigenous people are suffering and large keystone species are dying just to mention a few examples. Is there no morality in government or in the people anymore?

We need to protect this planet not only for the future of our children but because every living thing deserves dignity. Providing a few jobs or increasing wages will be temporary if we don't have a planet to support us. I find it unconscionable that a world superpower is not taking the lead in climate change policy but is actually about to take multiple steps backwards.

I have provided a few scientific peer reviewed research articles from some of the most reputable journals to support this letter. Please take a look at them.

I appreciate your attention.

I ran a marathon

Ten and a half months after giving birth to my son I ran a marathon.

This little guy was born three weeks early and took a while to gain enough weight at a rate that the lactation people were comfortable with. This mama went from being a happy new mom expecting little sleep to having a deep gut feeling of being very unhappy. Anxiety over his weight gain, sleep deprivation, added to a little thing called post-part-um depression which rocked my world and took me away from my old self. I was even having a hard time appreciating this new little creature that needed me 100%.

It took my a while to recognize how I was feeling. I was sure that it was the IUD. I had 20 pounds on me that was not just melting away with breast feeding and it had to be the IUD. Especially after the quick internet search that said so. That might be the case for some women, but I think for many, it is not. I finally  got on some antidepressants and over the next few weeks spent some time figuring out how to live for the rest of my life with this new child and returning to feeling normal.

I think it was around when Ivan was seven months old I decided I needed to do something. I was swimming, biking (a little), running, and doing some strength classes at the gym. It wasn't enough though. My neighbor was doing a marathon and I saw her come home from her 16 mile run. I was jealous. I wanted that feeling of a long run. The shower and the laziness that comes with the rest of the day. the sore muscles, and the sleep that comes with training (ha, that probably wouldn't happen). That afternoon I talked with Erik and looked up races. We had a Delta companion ticket to use before the end of the year, so why not fly somewhere, with a 10 month old to run a marathon? An idea my parents are still refusing to acknowledge. It's not that crazy, is it?  A little online searching and Erik being excited about an adventure led me to the Death Valley Trail Marathon.  The race was staged at Furnace Creek Ranch. A hotel in Death Valley National Park. First, there was a sweet pool. I won't stay anywhere without a pool this pool was even better because it was from a fresh warm spring.   Secondly, I could walk to race check in, get on a bus, and go run a marathon while Ivan and Erik slept. No hassle and a fun little vacation.

Before I could actually go and "race" I needed to get ready to run 26.2 miles. And actually, the race and the little trip were the reward. The training was really why I was doing all this. The time to work on getting my body back to what it was before Ivan. An excuse to really get in the miles. An excuse to put in those headphones and go and figure out life. I was stoked.
Highlights of that training. I ran from Bozeman Creek Trailhead to Moser. I ran from the bottom of Flathead pass to the top and back again. I ran 10x800 with a 400 in between on a 3:45. I pushed Ivan for over 100 miles in the Bob. I ran an hour here, an hour there, I doubled up one day. I did long runs on the weekends. I worked up from 15 miles a week to 50. It was fun to do the work. It was fun to write my own plans and watch the effort and the mileage increase each week. It was really cool to see my fitness progress.

Finally race week came. We flew to St. George. A very small airport and were given a very big car. The King Ranch!

We drove to Death Valley and spent Friday checking out this very cool national park.
The Devil's golfcourse. These mounds are infused with salt. They are very sharp.
Badwater Basin. We are a few hundred feet below sea level here. Erik liked to taste the salt. Ivan thought it was a pretty crazy texture.
These two had so a really good time together. Ivan loves his daddy.

Sand dunes. We ran around them as the sun set upon us. Ivan got a little cold but I think he liked exploring.

Race morning came and I walked (two minutes) from our hotel over to breakfast and check-in. I cannot stress enough how low anxiety this race was. We had a little pre race meeting where we sang God Bless America and realized the race director won Alcatraz Triathlon. Sweet! This guy now makes a living running these awesome races. We loaded onto the buses.

Ironman really needs to upgrade your transportation. These things were sweet!
The start was beautiful but cold and windy.

That up there is the top of the 12 mile climb.

I made some friends and took pictures at the top of the final climb

14 miles downhill. A 6-7% grade average. It was tough.

I felt good during the first 10 miles. Some guy had a really good pace going and I comfortably pushed myself to stay on his heels. After 10 miles we descended a bit and made the final climb and then it was all downhill from there. Without a pacer I ran pretty slow. Stroller running, maybe? I also don't do good with downhill and didn't want to cramp. The footing was not great and got kind of annoying after a while. I lost a couple of toenails. I came out of the box canyon and had three miles to the finish. You could see the buses. Erik and Ivan had come up a couple of miles and it was a special treat to see them. I felt pretty good finishing. Final results. AG 3rd and overall 8th out of 56 women. With a slow time of 3:48, this race must be pretty slow for everyone.

I fell apart at the halfway point, need more fitness, more core work, and the downhill just wasn't the best for me. However, I did it and didn't do so bad. Happy to have made the adventure with Ivan and Erik. Looking for more to come.

Next Beaverhead 55k. 34 miles. To be continued....

Seven months

We have now reached the beautiful age of seven months. I am really liking this age. Ivan smiles, giggles, is rolling all over the place, sitting up, drooling and so much more.

I was really inspired the other day to write something beautiful here and now I don't remember what it was. I think I need to come back to this.

Notables:

Ivan just started sleeping!!! He goes to bed, wakes at midnight or so and then usually sleeps until 8. I do feed him at 5 or 6, but that is fine as long as he keeps sleeping. It feel so good to sleep.

I find the progression interesting. We went from his room, to our room and Ivans room at 5. I haven't slept with him for about three weeks when we went to LeAnn's wedding. I sort of miss it, but it is also part of him getting bigger and more independent. We have created a nice room for him. His own space and I think he likes it and I do too.

Five montths

Ivan just turned five months. Here is a list of notables.

His beautiful hair fell out. He rubbed it all off. He has a mullet and a mowhawk. But I think his hair is starting to grow back in.

He just had a growth spurt. I had to give him formula just to satiate him.

He is rolling over now and recognizes and tries to touch Mister Man.

He still isn't sleeping for many hours together. 11:30, 2:30, 4:30, 5:30 and then I give up and bring him to bed with me. I like sleeping with him though.

We went camping

We went swimming

We went to Idaho

His afternoon nap is starting to emerge

His interest in my drinks is starting to emerge. If I have a glass when he is on my lap he grabs for it.

O k a better go. Groceries are sitting in a very hot car.

Health coach diary

Feeling like things are getting better and more orderly in this new life. For one my way of thinking is starting to change. I am excited about things I can do with Ivan rather than sad about the things I can't do.

A few major steps this month

1. Long story but ended up at my doctor office and am now on a low dose of antidepressants. I have an appointment to see a therapist this week.

2. Joined a gym where there is really affordable child care. Me and the treadmill have gotten to be good friends and I am okay with that.

3. Went to see the PT. The appointment wasn't as productive as I was hoping but I met a couple of really cool new people and did get a few more core and some shoulder exercises to do. Also some advice on breastfeeding to help my back, shoulders, and neck.

4. Have been working a little bit with the nanny watching Ivan. I have been practicing pumping at work and be efficient at work. I now look forward to the time I get to spend with him which is a really good balance.

Every once in a while I get a bit down and overwhelmed but nap time and bedtime are getting more consistent which is helpful for a schedule and my own time to eat etc.

I think Ivan and I will try doing the Mothers day 5k together which will be special for all the reasons described above.

Three months

This Sunday will make three months with little Ivan in this world. I have started the process of returning to work and acknowledging that I am experiencing some post partum depression. Got on anti depressants, and am going to go visit a therapist.
Ivan is thriving. His eyes are turning blue, he smiles, keeps his head up for tummy time. I think he may even be sleeping a little longer at night.
Yesterday I went to work for an afternoon. Van have me his pouty lower lip face when I got him. We missed each other. A lot. Today I am relishing his afternoon cluster feeding and cat napping. This cuddly little baby, my son, is going to grow up quick.

We are getting more comfortable going out and about. Lots of hikes and runs. Also grocery store stops.

I still can't believe that I created this perfect little human being.

Month number two!

Well, we have survived two months. So much has happened, evolved, and changed in two months. Our lives are completely different and Ivan has changed and grown so much. He is now 9 LBS 14 OUNCES.  We have the breast feeding going better and hopefully the fussing starts to taper away. I am now starting to think about work, childcare, and balancing all of it while taking care of myself and my marriage. Grateful to have family in town and a wonderful mom who loves to take care of him. Ivan, you are growing on me though. I think I got a first real smile today. It melted my heart. I love my family.

Birth Story

I have been meaning to write this for a long time now. Already, six weeks later, the memories are starting to fade.
On the Monday before I had gone to the doctor and gotten a strep test. I ended up bleeding a lot, I was also having contractions, so I got admitted to Labor and Delivery. I was in Labor and Delivery for a couple of hours getting monitored and everything was okay. However, I am pretty sure I lost my mucous plug that day or the next and was super mucousy for the rest of the week. I was also having Braxton Hicks contractions all week. Saturday rolled around and we went out for lunch with Erik's mom and did a little shopping. By evening, I was super tired. We made a big dinner and I did some yoga. After dinner I was going to relax on the couch and my water burst. I could feel it inside me pop open and then we had liquid everywhere. This was at 9:10pm. It had started snowing, so it took a bit to get to the hospital.

Total labor and delivery was 4.5hours. I pushed for 40 minutes. The doctor told me I only had a few pushes left and I think it was about 20 later that he came out. Pushing was so much better than contractions. The pain was so much better. Contractions were the most painful thing I have ever experienced.
I will never, ever forget my first view of Ivan after he was born. He was covered in that white stuff, pale, on his stomach draped over the doctors arm and he let out an immediate cry.  His face lookubg mostly like it still does today. I will also never forget him laying on my chest for the first time. Making his soft ah,ah,ah cry. The older he gets the less I hear of that cry. I really loved the sound of that. He wasn't unhappy it was more of a I am now comfortable cry.

Milestones

Well Ivan, we have come to two milestones. First, was your one month birthday. I took pictures of you that day. I promise. I was basically still too stressed out about you gaining weight to make a huge deal out of it. Which leaves us at the second milestone. We graduated from lactation on February 22. We weighed you in and you were 8lbs 3ounces. You gained from 7lbs 10 ounces on the Thursday before. I was tired of hearing how to feed you and the lactation nurse agreed we were safe to let you go. What a relief. It is now February 28th and I am still worried about you eating, my nursing, my milk coming in, etc. but you are doing great and we love you very much. What a huge obstacle we have overcome.

Little baby not gaining weight

These past couple of days have been super challening. Ivan is not gaining weight and breast feeding is just not cutting it. We are now having to breast feed, bottle feed, even syringe feed, and then pump. Sometimes the bottle has to be supplemented with formula which Ivan hates. He makes a big face and won't suck. Poor little guy gets tired and I don't even feel like I am enjoying him trying to get him to take on the food. The nurses and the doctors are concerned and they even mentioned a feeding tube and the hospital today.

For me this this is an emotional nightmare. I just start to cry at every weigh in when there is not enough weight gain. I also cry at home when he throws up or won't take the formula bottle. I don't think the lack of sleep helps and I love everybody who comes by but I feel a little like I need to tend to him not to them.

This story is going to have a happy ending. It is just being in the moment that is trying. I need to keep remembering Susan's card. Don't hurry the journey, at all.

Time to feed. Fingers crossed.

One week old today

Well this blog missed the birth story. I will put that on my list of to dos, but for now I want to skip right to the one week old. Ivan Drago Hornovich, I can't believe your father convinced me to give you that last name or that we went with Drago. Anyway, you are here now and your little face is already implanted in my brain. What a test and an accomplishment you have been. Looking at you today and everyday since you were born I can't believe you are here and I can't believe that I and yourdad created such a perfect little human. I have to say evenings are hard. I don't know if it is hormones or being tired but I usually go to sleep in tears. Not sad tears, well maybe a little. For not being the same for Mister, or anything else that seems sad, but I am still happy, and when morning rolls around, and the day begins again, everything is good. I keep having thoughts I wish I would write down and now don't remember any of them.

I hope we are doing everything right. I hope you are eating, pooping, peeing enough. Not sleeping too much. I worry about all those things as well. Part of me as I described in my last blog that is challenging.

One thing for sure. My heart swells just a bit more for you everyday. I love you my  little Vanya.

Almost 37 weeks and full term

This past week has been interesting as far as the pregnancy is concerned. Monday at a routine doctors appointment my body decided to go through a series of events that landed me in Labor and Delivery getting observed. All these pushups I thought Ivan was doing were actually contractions. Now that I know what a contraction feels like I feel like I am getting them all the time and am going to go into labor at any moment. On Monday I was also 1cm dilated and 80% effaced. Further, I am feeling very pregnant. I don't have any desire to do much more than walk a little bit. Tried running a couple of steps and the weight of the baby and my expanding cervix made it feel all wrong. I don't think I want to wait three weeks but am super nervous and have a lot of anxiety about what the new changes are going to be. I also realized I am having a hard time with the unknown. Not knowing when labor is going to start is hard. Not knowing what the lack of sleep is like is scary. However, these are the things in life that make us grow. Grow stronger, learn new things, make us better people. How can I not accept it and although I may not like it, appreciate the experience.

I think we are pretty ready though. Everything except the car seat. I think it is installed correctly but still moved around a bit and hits the seat in front. Heading to the firestation tomorrow to see if they can install it in the middle. Funny how you can't leave the hospital without a car seat but that is one of the last things to get done.

12/31/2015

34.5 weeks

It is New Years Eve and I just read a Facebook post reflecting on the year which got me thinking. I have to say 2015 probably wasn't my best year. We spent January and February and maybe some of March finishing the house and moving, which I did not call fun. I went to St. George and had a terrible race, had to find a new job because my old boss went to another school. I did put on a successful Bobca Triathlon to only have those fuckers and the institution of MSU take it away.   I also got pregnant in May, so a lot of the year was spent with a lot of thought of this little creature growing inside of me.

Upon this reflection I need to make a more positive spin. (give me a break, I have been home sick for almost a week) In February we finished our beautiful house. I love my house! I suspect we will be here for a long time. I then got pregnant . It only took a couple of months and then bam, my life changed FOREVER. I have now been spending the last 8 months incubating a life inside of me and really that has been an experience that has been worth it. I was also able to gravel with amazing friends to triathlons, even if ,y races didn't go well or I didn't race at all. I got to spend some time at the beach with my Mom and another time on a nice trip with my husband. My new job is much better than the old one and although it keeps making uncomfortable, at the end of the day I feel rewarded.

I am excited for 2016 and what the year brings. Ivan will decide to join us in our beautiful new home here in the next few weeks. I am nervous and excited to meet him. We will never go back to our old way of life but I am pretty certain that the new way will be more fulfiling. I am excited to be able to go running outside. I want to do intervals on the bike and some good solid track workouts. Feel the gasping breath and blood in my mouth again. Oh, and to drink a full adult beverage will be nice. Maybe take a trip and get Ivan used to plane travel at a young age.

Here is to 2016. The best year yet.

12/18/2015

32 weeks

I just read something on Facebook about not being afraid to follow your dreams because of the time it might take to accomplish them. Immediately I realized one of my dreams is to qualify and go to the Ironman World Championship in Kona. It sounds terrifying but I think I really want to do it.

I was trying to do some yoga on Wed. and the teacher of the you tube video had some really good thoughts that relate to how I am generally feeling. Some days I feel really pregnant, tired, have a lot of heartburn. Other days, I feel really energetic, get good sleep, and like my belly isn't quite that big. Yoga is the same. Some days feel good others don't. Just recognizing this now and accepting it is important. Realizing it is part of the process rather than being negative about it is important. I also have to realize that once Ivan gets here, life is going to be the same way. Unpredictable (for a while anyway) and some days, moments etc harder than others.

11/26/2015

29.5 weeks and Thanksgiving

It is Thanksgiving and the perfect time to reflect on what I am thankful for.
1- So many great people in my life.
2- That at 29.5 weeks pregnant I can run a 5k with my baby and feel really good doing it.
3- A combination of the above. The fact there is a Thanksgiving day run and that this year like in the past couple of years I got to run it with my friends. Lawrence you are awesome and I got to run it pregnant. Ivan has done two 5ks already!
4- My amazing, smart, clever, and sweet husband who is about to be an even better father. I can't wait to love you even more Erik.
5- My beautiful, warm, comfortable house that my husband designed and my father built. They did such a good job I don't like to be anywhere else.
6- That I have a job that is rewarding and supplies us with great healthcare.
7- That I get to live in Bozeman and on days like today the sun comes out and warms the back of your legs just enough to say that I love Bozeman.
8- My Mister Man. Who is currently being tortured by the bob tail cat out the window. He is such a snuggle bug how can you not just love him.

Ivan you could be here in 6 weeks. I am getting excited to meet the little creature that keeps moving around inside me.

11/19/2015

28 weeks, 3rd trimester, and my birthday

I was just thinking the other day that pregnancy in some ways is similar to Ironman training. The final day seems so far away for a while, then at a certain point you sort of start to get tired of it and are ready to be done, however, at the same time it seems so close and you still have so much to do to be prepared. Ivan, you are getting bigger and I can feel you a lot of the time. It makes me excited to meet you!  But I still have to get so much done before you get here.

11/04/2015

25 weeks

It's time to write again. What has happened in the last three weeks and what are my thoughts for moving forward. I have bought more newborn clothes than I think Erik has clothes. I am a little concerned about my inability to see past the newborn stage. What am I going to do for clothes when he grows out of them in a month? The bedroom is a disaster and furniture needs to be sold and bought and blinds need to go in. I need to start checking some of this stuff off the list. Work needs to come together before I take leave. If it is not one thing that stresses me out, it is another. I have been trying to take the time to enjoy the moment more. Yoga, on the hydrobed at the chiropractor, or drinking a small cup of morning coffee. I keep trying to exercise and am motivated for triathlon again. Oh, yeah, I need to sell my bike.

Ivan- I dreamt that you were here and I was packing to take you on a trip. Sort of crazy dream with lots of way too big diapers. I then realized that I had lost you. I had lost you and had no idea where you went. It was hard to wake up because I wanted to find you first. The first thought I had when I got up (without finding you) was that I love you and that I will never lose you. I think that is the first time I have ever told you I love you.

26 weeks and thoughts on having it all

Ivan is getting bigger. I woke up the other night with his head above my belly button. When I tried to feel what all the pressure was about he moved away. I was sort of half asleep but that was probably the biggest connection I have had with him so far. I felt his little head in my belly!

This week I also discovered this things called diastasis. This is why you can't do everything and for a very good reason. I stopped trying to do plank and use my front core in yoga. You can make the muscles on your belly separate even more and wow, I think it might be hard to get that flat stomach back again. Currently, if I engage my front core my stomach tents. That is my guts being held in by my fascia. So gross.

I also read this very interesting article about women and men and ambition and success. To me it sounds like women have way too much expectation to do and handle it all while men are just more successful because they aren't expected to handle it all. They are just expected to be successful at their jobs. It sounds like although that sounds great and supportive when people say you can do it, they are also sort of setting us up for failure. I am not sure if it is possible to be successful in a job, balance a family, stay in sport etc. Something has to give and it sounds like women choose the job. I can say that although I value my job and I want to work (a little bit) and keep this thing in my life. I also don't want to lose out on time with my new son and I don't want to lose out on sport.

22 weeks with Crazy Ivan

I just read that I should write a letter to Ivan. It made me instantly decide to blog. I stopped during the first trimester in fe as r of somebody reading this and then something happening.

At 22 weeks I am really starting to feel pregnabt. My belly is big enough to get in my way and make it hard to get out of bed. I can feel Ivan kicking or moving around a lot. We had our ultrasounds and he is active.

Ivan seems to be the name. I am not 100% sold but it seems to be sticking. I want to think of a great middle name and Erik and I need to talk more about his last name. Zickovich? It makes my heart swell to know that Erik suggested it.

So, Ivan. Often when I think about you I think of what I hope for you as a core being of a person. I really hope you are calm. Calm and composed like your father. I hope you don't have a lot of anxiety in life and I hope I don't give that to you because of the anxiety I feel and have felt while incubating you. Ivan, I also hope for you to be strong. Strong physically and mentally. That you make a way in life that is defined by you and you do what makes you happy.

I flagged at a 5k running race today. Sorry Ivan. That cow bell was really loud. I was expecting some fast racers to come by but no, it never happened. I was sort of surprised how many people were walking and kids resting, getting carried, walking. Lots of kids and families. I think it is a good thing that they are all out there but again surprised by how tough 5k  looked to some people.

I am telling you right now Ivan. You will not be getting carried. I hope you are that first kid through, running the whole race. I hope that your dad and I can be role models for you in our lifestyle, training, and racing and you believe in yourself to strong and fast.
